About Mush

Mush is a great mailer for Unix-like systems.

It has three different user interfaces - basic line interface, similar to the one of standard mail program (this is my favourite), screen interface based on curses library - in which you can choose letters by scrolling through the list of letters, and graphic interface (Solaris only).

The coolest is taht, while maintaining compatibility with standard mail (both in terms of interface and of config files and mailboxes), it adds many features that were missing in mail.

New features include:
- automated letter signing (it's also possible to have few alternative signatures, dependant on the adressee)
- ability to add fortunes to letters
- ability to quote the letter we reply to - with configurable quoting format
- ability to define own commands for both line and screen mode - separated command sets
- command switches - which when connected with the previous feature lets define a command that replies with quoting and automatically calls editor
- ability to direct unknown commands to shell - which gives the ability to do almost anything without leaving mush
- it's very highly configurable - almost anything can be reconfigured
- powerful filtering and piping - which makes it posible to eg. use MIME
- automatical piping letters through pager
- automatical line breaking on a given column
- possibility to add addressees names to aliases - so you can address the letters more nicely
- partial MIME support (set the variable metamail to eg. metamail, or better metamail -p).
- Finally there's also a version capable of sending MIME complaint messages (this makes it possible to eg. use attachments, polish characters, etc.). It's available in Debian GNU/Linux Mush package.
- support for various mail transport agents and mailbox formats (sendmail, smail, mmdf, etc. - compile time option)
- support for POP protocol (enhanced in unofficial version found in Debian GNU/Linux distribution)
- and more
